Where You Can Sign Up

You enroll through Social Security

Medicare provides your coverage, but you sign up through Social Security (or the Railroad Retirement Board). They confirm you're eligible — including whether you've paid Medicare taxes long enough to get Part A premium-free — and they process Part B requests too.

Turning 65?

Four Ways You Can Sign Up

Online at Social Security

The easiest and fastest way to sign up, and where you'll also apply for any financial help you may qualify for. You'll need to create a free, secure my Social Security account first, then you can complete your Medicare application from home in about 10 minutes.

Call Social Security

Prefer to sign up over the phone? Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY users: 1-800-325-0778). Representatives are available during business hours and can walk you through your application step by step. Please note, when calling, appointments can be scheduled 4-8 weeks out.

Visit Your Local Social Security Office

If you'd rather sign up face to face, you can apply in person at your local Social Security office. Appointments are recommended to cut down on wait times, so call ahead before you go.

Railroad Retirement Board

If you or your spouse worked for a railroad, you'll sign up through the Railroad Retirement Board instead of Social Security. Call them at 1-877-772-5772 to start your Medicare enrollment.

Already 65 and still working?

You can sign up for Part A and/or Part B when you're ready to end your work-based coverage, using any of the four ways above. Two important steps to avoid a lifelong Part B late-enrollment penalty:
Have your employer complete the Request for Employment Information form to prove you had creditable coverage since turning 65.
Complete the Application for Part B to enroll.
